NCHCA Recruitment Project Survey

Welcome

NCHCA has undertaken a multi-year recruitment project with funding from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development to address labour shortages in the heavy construction industry. At the highest level, this project is aimed at improving the perception of the heavy construction industry so that it is perceived as an attractive, sustainable career choice.

Current Situation
The heavy construction industry is experiencing significant labour shortages. Over the next decade, Canada will see more than one fifth of its construction labour force retire. The exit of 2 in 10 construction workers to retirement represents a significant loss of skills and experience. In order to develop long-term, sustainable strategies to address the current and anticipated labour shortages, we need to have a clear picture of the current situation. We need to understand if and how current practices and perceptions are contributing to a declining number of people choosing careers in the heavy construction industry and why they are leaving the heavy construction industry.
