Fall/Winter High School Upgrading Teaching Application Form

Experienced teachers are welcome to apply to Chinook Learning Services. Teacher hiring is based on the following criteria:
  • Valid Alberta Education Teaching Certificate; 
  • Classroom experience and curriculum knowledge; 
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the needs of students with diverse learning needs and/or EAL background; 
  • Commitment to participating in a collaborative Professional Learning Community focused on the continuous development of classroom practice.
Our aims for High School Upgrading:
  • To provide upgrading opportunities to students by offering instruction from Grades 10 through 12 under the guidelines of Alberta Education;
  • To create a student-centered environment that is both flexible and supportive of adult students' time constraints, background knowledge, educational needs and the achievement of their individual goals; 
  • To provide learning experiences which motivate students to attend classes and stay in school.
Teachers are expected to:
  • Understand and promote Chinook Learning Services philosophy of adult education (see Chinook Learning Services Identity Statements); 
  • Create welcoming learning environments; 
  • Engage all students in their learning through student collaboration, use of technology and innovative practice; 
  • Use Outcomes-based Assessment & Reporting practices; 
  • Maintain comprehensive Brightspace by D2L course shells; 
  • Communicate with Learning Leaders and subject teams; 
  • Be able to work in a blended learning environment.
Please note:
  • A variety of class schedules are offered, including evenings and Fridays. 
  • Core academic subjects are offered (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies). 
  • Aboriginal Studies is offered as an elective subject. 
  • Teaching assignments are only offered on a semester basis. 
  • Hourly teachers are paid based on the hours of instruction assigned and are expected to prepare all teaching materials and exams and meet with students, other teachers and administration within reasonable time limits outside of class time (consistent with Article 3.7 of the ATA Collective Agreement). 
  • Classes will run based on registration demand. 
  • AR 4029 requires that applicants new to CBE who are offered employment complete police security clearance. 
  • Employees will be required to complete annual online Occupational Health and Safety requirements

Chinook Learning Services Registration:
  • Students will register online in August and January. 
  • Classes will run out of Forest Lawn High School (1304 44 St. SE), James Fowler High School (4004 - 4 St. NW), and Lord Beaverbrook High School (9019 Fairmount Dr. SE).
  • Daytime classes will run for students who are under 20 as of September 1 at all three sites;
  • Evening classes will accept students under 20 as of September 1 and students who are over 20 at both James Fowler High School and Lord Beaverbrook High School.
