The Government of New Brunswick is conducting a review of natural gas development in the province. The review is part of government’s broader work to explore all options to strengthen New Brunswick’s economy and deliver services New Brunswickers can count on.
As part of this work, government will undertake a comprehensive review of the conditions associated with the current moratorium and assess whether they continue to represent the most effective regulatory approach for natural gas development in New Brunswick today.
The review will consider five key areas:
- First Nations rights, interests and priorities: The perspectives, priorities and information needs identified by First Nations leadership and communities, including potential approaches to partnerships, governance, benefits, and safeguarding the environment.
- The resource: The size and nature of New Brunswick’s natural gas resources and the current state of the industry.
- Science, technology and environmental impacts: What the latest science tells us about potential impacts on water, health, and the environment, as well as advances in technology and methods for developing natural gas resources safely.
- Economic benefits: How royalties, jobs, investment and other economic benefits could deliver value to New Brunswickers and local communities.
- Public support: The views of New Brunswickers, communities and stakeholders on the potential for responsible natural gas development.
The purpose of the review is to better understand whether the factors that informed previous decisions continue to reflect current science, technology, environmental considerations, regulatory practices, and public expectations.
No decision has been made regarding the future of natural gas development in New Brunswick. The current moratorium remains in place.
Any future decision will be informed by evidence, public input, environmental protection, public health considerations, economic impacts, Indigenous perspectives, and public confidence.
The Government of New Brunswick is committed to an open and respectful dialogue with New Brunswickers, Indigenous communities, local governments, industry representatives, experts, and stakeholders throughout the review process.
Purpose of the survey:
Public input is an important part of the review.
This survey is intended to help government better understand the views and priorities of New Brunswickers regarding natural gas exploration and development.
